“I really like it, but it’s a pity about the vocals”
– David Bowie, according to vocalist Steve Jolliffe, who adds: “I thought: ‘You b******!’ Ha ha!”
If you have ever wondered what Tangerine Dream’s 1978 album ‘Cyclone’ would sound like without its controversial experiment with vocals, well, with the help of some of that equally maligned AI, here is the answer! To compensate for the disappearance of Steve Jolliffe’s vocals (his vital instrumental contributions remain, of course), the show also features a long excerpt from his solo sequel, ‘Cyclone Spheres’.
Other music in the show is as varied as always, ranging from Tomosla to Tomita and from Nash the Slash to Les Baxter.
PS It only just occurred to me that someone would probably have tried such trickery on the ‘Cyclone’ tracks already. Indeed, I see that someone on YouTube has cheekily posted an instrumental version of ‘Rising Runner Missed by Endless Sender’. I don’t see ‘Bent Cold Sidewalk’ there, though, so maybe an instrumental version of that, at least, will be new to you!
Tracks by Tomosla, David Boulter, Nash the Slash, Joe “Fingers” Carr, John Morris, Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle, Les Baxter, Tangerine Dream, Steve Jolliffe, Zone, Medusa Cyclone, Sylvian & Sakamoto, Bamboo Ensemble of Sangkar Agung Village, Linnko Kishi, 奥斯卡電子琴音樂, 閃電節奏樂團 and Tomita.
